    Posted: 03 June 2008 at 11:04am
When out walking our Jess (six month old GSD) I get mixed reactions from passers by ranging from 'oh my' to 'wow' to 'OH NO'. She does not bark at people only goes into high alert if there are big groups - She is working on improving this. She will bark if barked at Shocked - we'll have to work on that.

Now I have been selfish as far as muzzling her is concerned ie I havent! She walks very obediently by my side on a light 'dainty'- looking leash (although you could tow a tractor with it) and NEVER pulls.

I know that there is a perception that GSD's are a viscious breed and feel the muzzle will only tar Jess with that same brush at an early stage.

I know of one other GSD fairly close to us but he is their pet as well as a guardian so is walked on country lanes with little chance of strangers passing.

When would be the time to muzzle her or should I start right away?

EDIT: Perhaps i should have posted this under Dog Regulations as she should by law be muzzled.

if it were me i wouldn't muzzle her! As she is obviously your dog and you know her best do you think she needs to be muzzled???  Isn't it law that you have to have restricted breed muzzled? If so i might be safest to have her muzzled in case some twat were to kick up a fuss over it - i really don't know, its a tough one! I never see any restricted breed here muzzled

prob should have put this up in general to get more of a response as the topics here are pinned here as a resource for people to read over rather than reply (I think)

well Idon't like see-ing dogs muzzled but what happens if and I say big if here - something were to happen? I had a member of this forum out with me on sunday for a walk on the beach. She owns a rotti and has him muzzled and I seriously doubt very very much that he needs it, he is super friendly and under control.

I would get her used to it while she is young if u intend to use it. Like everything else - the younger they learn to deal with something the better.

Maybe use a halti - not quite a muzzle but people often think they are Lamp

Thanks for your replies. The halti is a geat idea, I might use that to keep trouble away, but get her used to a muzzle as well.

The thought of her biting someone is unthinkable - at this stage I have no concerns but would prefer to be safe.

It is a quandary

just as a matter of interest , if you knew this law was in place before you got a GSD , and you knew by law they had to be muzzled , and you now cant bring your self to do it, why did you pick a breed on the control of dogs list ?? she is a beautifull dog btw .

Hi, yes its me who has the rotti. I dont muzzle my fella and would be hard pushed to make me do it. Ive never been stopped and this law is not enforced. Now if it was enforced and i was stopped and made put one on i would think about it.
I have a good strong dogmatic headcollar on him, like the halti but much better. I never let him off in public as hes not allowed and its not that he would do anything, but not everyone wants to say hi to him but he wants to say hi to them.
Personally i think the muzzle makes them look more fierce and not a lot of people know there is a law in place so would be thinking he must be vicous if he has a muzzle on.
There are so many bloody dogs that i meet out when walking that should be muzzled instead of my fella.
I don think ive seen any of the restricted breeds with muzzles on when out walking.

TBH I have been putting it to the back of my mind as i think the muzzle frightens people more than the dog. I saw a muzzled GSD out for a walk in Kilkenny City the other day and it brought it home to me that Jess will have to be muzzled Embarrassed - to us she is still a puppy.

We keep Jess secure at home and ALWAYS on a lead when out walking or on a long line when she goes swimming in the lake.

Thanks for your compliment Smile

I agree with you on both of those comments.

I know that the muzzle is a legal requirement, so shall use it.

Thanks

fully understand where your coming from , its the main reason i dont have a GSD, i love them but just couldnt handle the muzzleing and the no off lead time .in fairness i do see alot of people around my way that do muzzle the dogs on the control of dogs act list, some will let them off lead if they are muzzled very late in the evening in the local park , which is usually when its only other dog walkers that are in the park .maybe one day ill get mine Wink.

If i want to let him off the lead i just bring him to places where there arent any people, theres a field at home and never anyone there so he gets off the lead there and at work too, all the fields on the stud he gets to run free on, hes prob walked more off the lead than on really.
He gets off the lead after flyball too and has great fun playing with all the dogs there.

We are fortunate in that we have a big enough garden, so enough room for the dogs to run around in.

Thanks all

I have GSD's and I will muzzle if i want , it does not bother myself or the dogs, they are quite content with or without, they should never be left on for long stretches and IF you are going to go there use the basket ones not the restricted micki ones,( I hate them!!!).

Ur GSD is gorgeous.
I grew up with 4 different GSD & love em... am longing for another one now but have to wait a while.
I live near Phx Park... I often see ppl walking GSD and Rotti's there - OFF the lead AND not  muzzled or halti etc etc.
Doesnt bother me in the slightest... i always giev the owners the benifit... if the dogs off the lead its obviously well trained etc etc....
Libby is always off the lead (shes little cross breed) and likes to greet other doggies but i must admitt i would get her to heel if i saw a GSD tec off a lead untill i knew they were dog friendly... then shes grand to go play.
I met a guy last wk in phx park with a female rotti and a ickel doggie (cant remb breed) the little one & libby were playing & his rotti sat on (off lead) watching.... she was gorgeous.... such a good dog... she actually reminded me of your Cooper Andrea..... but not as sweet hee hee hee

Thumbs Up once your dog is under control no one has reason to give out!  And 9 times out of 10 dogs that are causing trouble on the streets are NOT on the restricted breeds list!!!! What does that tell ya!

Best of luck with your new boy, he's adorable!
