Hi Guys
I was just wondering if anyone could suggest a cure for my Shih Tzu puppy who's biting people's legs and ankles when they come into the house? She even does it to me! I've tried the "loud yelp" to let her know she's biting too hard but she sees it as a wonderful game and gets even more excited and rough. She's not viscious, just over exuberant and is also stunningly pretty so I could be accused of being too lenient on her because she's soooo cute but I must admit that I'm paying for it now.
She's 11months old so I don't think it's too late to break her of this very bad habit... any ideas please?
Jenny

Hi- welcome to the forum! Carry on with the loud yelping sound whenever she nips (or a clap of the hands and a stern ''ah-ah'' sometimes works better on older dogs), and then if she continues after one or two yelps/ah-ahs, pick her up and shut her in another room, without saying anything or making a fuss. Dogs are pack animals, they naturally want to be with their pack- so she'll soon learn unacceptable behaviour gets her removed from the pack, and to remain with you all, she musn't nip! Leave her in the other room for 2 minutes (or if she is barking/whining, leave her until she is quiet) and then allow her back in, praising her with fuss and a small treat for remaining calm, and repeating the process whenever she gets carried away again!
It'll take her a little while to cotton on, especially since she has been allowed to get away with this for so long, but don't worry- she'll get the message!

Hi shih also here and we had issues with the same the more you run the more she did it. We learned not to laugh and think its cute from early and that stopped her. But she used to chase the kids catch the troser legs and not let go. As sixstar said ....stop walking a loud no and a bang of foot to startle her and walk off slowly NO eye contact.
Our girl she was a very mouthy puppy and did play bite very hard....still does but only with me she knows not to do it to kiddies so she is good. But can get very very into it. They are very aloof and bossy dogs. not vicious just different....We play with all our dogs but she looks at you like your crazy if we play ball like....what you expect me to get that and give it to you ...almost saya well if you throw it and you want it you get it HAHAHA.
They are the biggest characters I have ever come across and so affectionate they almost want to crawl under your skin to show you how much they love you!!
Your dog is getting older and you need to nip this in the bud asap . She is a little old to be still mouthing shih are classed as maturer at that age. But the puppy doesnt fully wear off till about 15-18 months.:) Good luck ...oh if you havent post pictures:))))))

Thanks SixStar and LB, very kind of you to respond so quickly.
I've taken your comments onboard and intend to start this approach as of Saturday onwards... I'm working tomorrow so don't want to start it until I can give her my full attention.
I hasten to add that she is not alone at all whilst I work... my friend and my Pomeranian 'Pepper' are with her all day. Poor Pepper will be pleased if this biting activity stops as she too is a target of this behaviour and puts up with it very well indeed.
I will update you as to the success of this training - I hope! As for pics, I'm not yet familiar enough with the site to upload pics but will get to grips with it over the next few days and promise that pictures will be provided.
Thanks again,
Jenny

This is my baby girl Ellie; she has a dirty face... it should be white on both sides and the soother she found in the park is her favourite toy and she won't give it up for anyone!

The first time a kitten bites you, cry ow in a very high-pitched voice. The kitten will usually stop biting you. If it does not take your hands away and, then you stop whatever it was you were doing . yes stop immediately .
