Charlie went to the groomers nearly 2 weeks ago now, they shaved him down pretty short and its so much easier with a short coat, he dries easier after being at the beach, doesn't bring home as much sand and doesn't smell quite as doggy as when he had a longer coat. It's starting to grow back quite fast especially around his front end so Im thinking of giving it a go myself.

Im just looking for some tips and advice really as Iv never used a clippers before either on a dog or human. I usually just use a thinning scissors or a regular scissors but I can't get him very short with a scissors. I have clippers already but they are human clippers and not special dog ones, is there any difference between them and can I use just regular human ones? Also is there any knack to it or do I just run it down him? Is there any way I could hurt him by doing it wrong? I don't mind if I make a balls of it as it'l grow back quickly but I just don't want to hurt him.

He's a cairn x but has quite a thick undercoat and his coat is very wirey but doesn't mat. When it grows longer he looks like 2 bits of dog stuck together as his front end grows out in all directions like a lions mane, but his back end all grows back parallel to his body. LOL

Dee I do my cockers. I was spending a fortune at the groomers so I bought a clippers and a few blades at the pet expo 2 years ago. The trick to using the clippers to get a neat trim is to go with the grain of the hair. By that, I mean you clip from head down to tail, chin down to paws, and under the tail down to the paws. The belly is from chest towards the vital bits!! The length of the blade is also vital. I use a shorter one on the cockers ears and paws. I have an oster or is it oyster one and its great. You cant cut the dog with it but keep an eye on the blades as they can become very hot. I dont do around the face or bum with it as they are too sensitive. But both Alfie and Lucy tend to conk out when I'm doing it. Must be like a buzzing massage for them:-) . My only tip is get a good clippers. It will last you years and years and especially for thick coats. The cheap ones burn out.

Thanks for the info. Will defo give it a try anyways, I have a wonderful groomer and she really cares about the dogs and takes things really slow but the last time charlie was a bit nervous of the clippers, he didn't like them around his neck so she took things slow but had to do around his neck with scissors. Im hoping he will be a bit less nervous when its me doing in it in his home environment, but Il take it slow and hopefully can teach him that theres nothing to fear.
You use special dog ones then? Would human ones be fine to use? I don't want to go out and spend a fortune on good ones until I know that Il get the use out of them.

I've got an old pair of Wahl clippers, which I've had donkeys years but they still do the job! You really do need ones specially for dogs, they're quite different to human ones in regards to blades and safety features, they're also much quieter than human ones, so won't frighten the dog as much. You can always buy a second hand pair off eBay or something and then sell them on if you're not getting the use out of them Smile

I still get my Westie groomed professionally a couple of times a year but I use the clippers to do around his bum and underside in between grooms, then use the scissors around his paws, ears and face, just to keep him neat and tidy. I used to do my old Bernese on my own though as despite the size difference from a Westie, they're much easier to do! Just bits and pieces like face, tail and paws on them. I'll be doing my new pup too, getting him used to the clippers from a young age (not yet though, only got him yesterday!! [yes, I do have to mention it at every chance- just humour me for now LOL]).

Good luck, and let us know how you and Charlie get on if you do go ahead with the home grooming!

Well I tried it this evening and it was a great success, he was much more relaxed in his home environment and wasn't a bit nervous (with loads of bribery with liver cake treats LOL) so even let me cut around his neck and chest area, the only problem was he kept rolling over and asking for a belly rub and since Iv trained him that he must sit before all treats he kept sitting and trying to give me paw! LOL So it took a bit longer than it should've but we got there in the end. Also I think it was the vibration off the clippers that made him a bit 'happy'! LOL

I used the human clippers (remington precision, a cheap pair my mother picked up somewhere) and I was pretty impressed with them, only a low hum off them and I kept checking in case the blades were heating up but they didn't.
Since it went so well I think I'l look into getting a doggy pair, Il be up at pets at home sometime in the next 2 weeks so I was looking at these http://www.petsathome.com/shop/rechargeable-pet-hair-trimmer-set-by-wahl-15566 The cordless aspect would be very handy as I could use them outside or in the bathroom where the hairs are a bit easier to control (had to hoover every nook and cranny of the kitchen and Im still finding hairs EVERYWHERE) but the fact that their a bit cheap worries me as I don't want them dying after a few uses. Or maybe I might just save up and buy a decent one, would wahl or oster be a reliable brand to look for? The oster ones are up on €230 on zooplus, are they made of diamond or something! Shocked Id be weary of buying electrical items on ebay but I could have a look anyways.

Oh sixstar we must see pictures of your new pup, what name did you decide on in the end?

My cocker spaniel had a visit to the dog groomers 10 days ago and she completely clipped him out, every hair gone, very very short. I miss all the little curls on his paws and around his face. How long might it take for the hair to come back?

It should be back in about 3 to 4 months. Next time tell your groomer that you most definitely do not want your dog shaved down completely. Tell her you only want a tidy with the face and head shaved, bum shaved and inside back legs shaved plus inside the ears shaved. If you look after the coat well then this is all you should need doing. I would recommend buying a Furminator for keeping down the dander. You can buy one of these on eBay for about 17 euro or buy one in Ireland for 40 to 50 euro.
Remember if you are not specific with your groomer about what you want done, then she will more than lightly shave it all off.
If your dog doesn't like someone, you probably shouldn't either
