Should I Use A Shock Collar To Stop My Dog Barking?

  • 27/11/2015

When it comes to modifying a certain behaviour of your dog, you have two choices you can go with: A) The quick fix, which more often than not backfires at you. B) The more time consuming solution, which almost always works magic and sticks with your dog forever. Today, we'll be talking about the electric shock collar, which many dog owners like to use as a "quick fix" to get their canines to stop barking excessively. And, as you may have guessed by now (and as clearly stated in many pieces of writing, such as in this article about dog barking) you should NEVER use an electric shock collar on your dog under any circumstance, for dozens of reasons, most importantly of which will be discussed in this article. So, ready? Let's begin!

  • Pain: Electric shock collars are nothing but plain out PAINFUL for dogs, and just like you and I didn't appreciate learning via physically painful methods when we were young children, dogs don't either. Yes, shock collars do eventually get your dog to stop excessive barking, but for all the wrong reasons. You'll get a dog that doesn't excessively bark, as well as one that is now always very afraid, anxious and is traumatized.
  • Anger: When you instill fear in the heart of your dog by using a shock collar on them, you also give them all the means they need to become aggressive. And not just any kind of aggressive, but the seriously dangerous on your life and that of everyone around your dog kind of aggressive. Again, shock collars might get your dog to stop barking, but they do so with the most awful of techniques, by instilling fear in your dog up until one point where they just snap and "attempt to defend themselves" from the shock and whoever is admitting it to them.
  • Trauma: Using a shock collar on your dog is a surefire way to develop anxiety, stress and trauma in your dog, which you will then need to hire a professional (and spend a boatload of money in the process, mind you) to properly rehabilitate your dog and get them back to normal.

The aforementioned are only a few reasons among many, many more of why you should NEVER use a shock collar to stop your dog from barking excessively. Dog barking in and of itself isn't the real thing you want to stop here, because when a dog is barking they are only trying to communicate something to you or anyone else. You don't want this communication process to end, but you want to make sure that your dog only communicates something with barking whenever necessary. To learn more about dog barking, the wrong things you have to stay away from doing and the right practices you must do instead to ensure your dog doesn't excessively bark for no reason, check out this very in-depth article that covers everything you need to know about the subject.
