A Nation Of Dog Lovers? I Think Not

  • 01/01/2014

Our once fine boast that we are a nation of dog lovers can no longer be upheld, in my opinion. I am happy to say this is still true for a huge number of us but the number of dogs being abandoned and mistreated is still growing far quicker than the systems in place to help them can cope with and as a result hundreds of dogs are being destroyed every single day just because they are deemed to be a difficult or dangerous breed or they have developed behaviours that owners have found too challenging to cope with.

If you search on the Internet for dog training, you will be hit with over 44 million results. You simply do not have the time to go through all of that, no one does. Going through what you can will present you with so much differing advice that you will come away more confused about your dog than when you started and probably quite depressed and stressed out whilst looking at your dog even more bewildered than ever, wondering just what kind of demon is living in your house and how you arrived at this point in your life? How could such a wonderful puppy turn into such a monster, how can the quiet rescue dog you gave a wonderful new home repay your kindness in this way?

The answer is not in the 44 million results found on the Internet. The answer is not in the 26 million results found in a search for dog training books. The answer is not in the 16 million results found in a search for dog training clubs. The answer is much closer than you think, the answer is entirely within your grasp and your control but it is not immediately obvious. The answer, dear dog owner is you. The answer is not obvious because it has become hidden, if not lost under misinformation and misunderstanding of how dogs interact with the humans in their lives. Even their behaviour with their own kind has been misunderstood and misinterpreted and as a result we have forced our dogs to live lives of oppression, force, fear and pain because the world was told that dogs need to be dominated and ruled with an iron fist.

Dogs have emotional needs and feelings and are, in reality far more like us than we can ever dare to admit because daring to admit this is recognising everything we think we know about dogs is actually wrong and we all hate to admit we were wrong, don't we?

Having a dog is actually much more like having a child than anyone seems to realise and the dog needs to be raised as you would raise a child, it is just the communication that is different.

The understanding of dogs is developing at an alarming rate yet it is not reaching the average dog owner and this is where I come in. My mission, and when you work with me you will begin to understand how much this means to me, to educate as many dog owners as I can to understand their dogs in a whole new way that will give them and their dogs a relationship beyond anything they can imagine, even if their dog has behavioural problems.

Your dog is only after one thing from you. They need to know which behaviours we want and they only understand which behaviours we want by how we react to the different behaviours they present us with. These different behaviours are actually questions, the dog is giving us choices, multiple choices and it is up to us to simply choose the behaviours we want and react to and reward those we want. It really is that simple. Like any new skill, you need help to learn and to implement.

I also believe all dog owners would like a better relationship with their dog, I genuinely believe many dog owners do not realise just how intelligent and just how capable their dogs are, let alone what they are capable of. When the dog owners realise the potential of their dog and learn how to get the best out of their dog, their lives will never be the same again.
