Remember, Dogs Don't Speak English

  • 01/04/2016

Quite often I hear dog owners talk about how their dog just does not listen, will not do what they ask and acts like it does not understand. Well guess what dog owners your dog does not understand English. In this article I am going to discuss how you can start communicating with your dog so that it does understand what you want.

I always get a kick out of that dog owner that is constantly saying no to their dog. I really believe that some of these poor dogs actually think that their name must be "NO". English is not your dog's way to communicate. Your dog actually communicates with body language.

Now don't get me wrong your dog certainly can learn some commands in the English language or whatever language you choose to use. In order to teach your dog verbal commands you need to train your dog what each command or word means by showing him.

It's simple. If I want to teach a dog to sit I simply place it in the sit position as I give the "sit" command. The same goes for down, stand, stay and come when called. Most dogs are quick, easy learners and in fact they are usually excited to learn something new. They certainly want to learn what it takes to make you happy so be sure and give your dog a ton of praise to let it know that you are happy with what it is doing for you.

If you have read many of my articles you know that I am not a treat trainer. I am not saying it is wrong for every person or every dog but it just is not right for me. In fact I get calls daily with clients that DO NOT want to use treats. So how do you reward a dog for doing a good job and obeying your command? That is really simple, PRAISE. You always have it with you and most dogs just like humans love to be praised.

So since dogs do not understand English in the beginning and since I am sure you understand that each person has different body language then it is very important to understand that the initial training for any dog should be done by one person. Yes since body language is so important your dog needs that consistency for the training to be effective.

After your dog is trained, then and only then can you actually teach the other members of your family how to work with the trained dog. Now it knows the commands in English.

It's hilarious that dog owners think of dogs as 2-year-old children!
