Why The Eurasier Is The Perfect Family Dog
- 11/09/2016
Owning a dog is one of the most rewarding experiences in the world, offering plenty of fun and timeless memories. Dogs are more than pets: they’re friends, companions and loved ones who stand by us in the most trying of circumstances and they deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. There are many wonderful breeds out there, but one of the most unique is the Eurasier, created to be the perfect family dog.
The German breed was introduced in 1960 by Julius Wipfel, who wanted to create a sociable and healthy canine. He crossed a Wolf-Spitz with a Chow Chow and called the new dog a Wolf-Chow. Then, twelve years later, a Samoyed was crossed with the breed and it became known as a Eurasier. So, what makes these dogs so lovable and how do you decide whether they are right for your family?
Temperament
Wipfel was successful in his attempt to make a sociable breed, as Eurasiers are calm and mild mannered. Having been bred with the best qualities of the Chow Chow, Wolf-Spitz and Samoyed, Eurasiers are dignified and intelligent. They are vigilant and alert, forming strong bonds with their family. To make the most of this bond, Eurasiers need to have constant contact with their owners and are extremely sensitive to harsh words. Discipline is best carried out with a softer approach.
Eurasiers are companion dogs, meaning they aren’t well suited to being left in kennels or being used for working tasks. Training needs to be carried out by family members so the dog feels comfortable. It’s recommended they aren’t confined or chained up because they will become depressed.
With strangers they are reserved without being timid or aggressive.
Family Life
Eurasiers are known for bonding with the whole family rather than one person. This makes them excellent around children, but it’s still a good idea to monitor them around toddlers and small infants. With their intelligence they are quick to learn and easy to train. Just remember they have an independent streak and this means they may wander off to do something they find more interesting.
Health
Eurasiers are generally healthy dogs, though you should still carry out regular checks. The breed suffers from the following illnesses:
- Hip Dysplasia
- Thyroid issues
- Patella Luxation
- Elbow Dysplasia
- Eye diseases Entropian, Ectropian and Distichiasis
Am I right for the Eurasier?
Eurasiers are a robust breed that need plenty of physical exercise and to be treated as a member of the family. You should be prepared to walk adult dogs at least one and a half hours every day, letting them run freely when necessary. Gentle and consistent training is key to ensuring your dog has the best possible care. Regular grooming is also a must, but an adult Eurasier shouldn’t need more than one brush a week.
Eurasiers are energetic, courageous and loyal, and an owner should reflect those qualities. In return for a loving home, your dog will offer plenty of cuddles and amazing moments.
