It is a part of responsible dog care and helps to keep your dog clean, comfortable and healthy. May be you prefer to go to a professional groomer but if you want to save some money you can groom your dog at home.

First, let us have a look on some of the benefits of home grooming:

•    It saves money for you by avoiding trips to a professional groomer.

•    It also saves time for you as you can groom your dog according to your schedule.

•    More importantly, it strengthens your bond with your dog. He learns to trust you as you spend more time with him while caring and grooming him.

•    It is also a great way to stay aware of your dog’s health. It allows you to keep track of the changes in your dog’s appearance and attitude as you spend more time with him. With any sudden change in your dog’s behaviour, you get an alert that something is wrong and you can take the necessary steps to avoid any serious health problem.

Tips to groom your dog at home:

Before you start you need to set your grooming kit. You would not like to look for the tools once you start grooming. However, there is a long list of the grooming equipment, it depends on you what you select and what not. You need to keep following things handy before you begin the grooming:

•    Brushes

•    Combs and scissors

•    Ear Cleaner

•    Dog Nail Clipper

•    Dog Shampoo

•    Towel or a Dryer

Once you have collected the tools you will need in the grooming process you may proceed further.

Start With Combing and Brushing:

It is quite natural for the dogs to collect irritants like dirt, weeds, grass etc. in their fur. You need to get rid of these irritants by combing and brushing. Regular brushing helps you to keep your dog’s skin healthy and clean. If you have a short haired dog then you can use curry brushes or gloves and if your dog is long haired then you may use a steel comb, slicker, or a pin brush. Make sure you comb the tail as well. Do not keep brushing on the same spot for a long time. Brushing and combing will help you to remove dead hair and distributes the natural oils from the skin all over the coat and ensures a clean and healthy coat.

Nail Trimming:

It is important to trim the nails of your dog for proper grooming. If you do not trim the nails of your dog they may curl into the paw pads or cause a toe twist. You must trim your dog’s nail regularly to avoid this kind of problem. Take a very small part of the nail away at a time using a dog nail clipper. Trim only the clear and hard nail and avoid cutting the pink part.

Cleaning the Ears:

Do not forget to clean the ears of your dog. You can apply an ear cleaning solution with cotton to clean the ear. Just wipe the wax and the dirt from the ear. Dry the ear with dry cotton after you have cleaned the ear with a damp cloth or cotton ball.

Bathing the Dog:

bathing-dog.jpgKeep all the supplies hand at one place which you need as you won’t be running around once you start bathing your dog. You will need a bucket of lukewarm water or a bathtub, towel or a dryer, dog shampoo and a non-slip mat. Start pouring water on the dog. Make sure that the dog is completely wet before you apply shampoo. Dilute some shampoo in a jug of water and start lathering the dog while avoiding his eyes and mouth. When you have done with the cleaning and lathering again pour water on the dog to rinse him thoroughly. Now towel dry your dog and you are done with bathing your dog.

Once you have groomed your dog with love and care your dog is going to develop a stronger bond with you. Regular grooming of the dog will always keep him clean and healthy. Moreover, you will save some money which you can spend on better food and entertainment of your dog. After all, he is a lovely member of your family.
