5 Natural Treats Your Dog Will Love

  • 26/09/2014

This is a guest post by Dean Barrow, an avid raw feeding fan who runs Raw Dog Food, a raw feeding blog helping dog owners take the leap into the world of raw dog food. You can also find him on Twitter.

Dogs love treats, they’re great for their teeth, relieve boredom and keep them out of trouble for hours at a time. Today we’ll be running through my five favourite natural dog treats that will keep your pooch quiet this weekend.

P.S. Images included below should NOT be viewed by vegetarians/vegans ...

Bull pizzle

Bull pizzles, or bully sticks as often referred to, are cut up sections of a dried bull’s penis. Not for the faint hearted but dogs love them, especially the stink they give off (be warned!).

These are cheap to buy and can last for up to a few hours depending on the dog, perfect if you’re popping out for the afternoon and want to keep your dog entertained while you’re away.

 Moo tube

As the name suggests, moo tubes are actually cow windpipes, a safe bone-free treat that your dog will enjoy. Great for keeping your dog’s teeth clean and shiny, and a good source of glucosamine. You can feed these either thawed or frozen.

Half a lamb's head

Not for the squeamish however a great meal for any larger dog. Available from most raw suppliers, half a lambs head will give your dog the perfect balance of bone, tongue, eye, brain and muscle. Just watch out for when the eyeball bursts!

This should last for well over an hour, and even longer if frozen. A definite recommendation.

Marrow Bone

Rich in raw marrow and fat, and great for the seasoned chewer however not suitable for puppies. Marrow bones are a bit tougher than your average bone so should last for a good couple of hours. Great fun for your dog while you’ve got your feet up this weekend.

Raw Chicken Carcass

Next time you’re thinking of having a roast, perhaps strip the meat off whilst it’s still raw then give the carcass to your dog. Never feed a cooked carcass though otherwise the bone will be too brittle and may harm your dog.

For your first carcass, start small with the wings, then the legs, and build up to the whole thing. As with any bone, always supervise your dog whilst they are enjoying this one.
